The Krumble Kake cut adds tremendously to this blend. The latakia is right in your face, yet it's smoothed out with the burley and orientals. I also detected an unusual Oriental scent when snorked, hold on.., it's a freshly split oak log with shellac coating scent ( Turkish?, Burley?),. The smoke leans a little further to the sweet than the smokiness, and I can definitely pick up on the Perique and Orientals more than I had anticipated. Upon cutting the bag the latakia aroma permeated the room and my nose. I like to pack it a bit more moist than usual as I find that releases more of the flavor. Smoky and tastygreat room note and a delight to smoke! I like how it smells while burning, and I enjoy smoking it. I bought in a half pound of PK and Star of the East a month or so ago and am very happy that I decided to try this beautiful cake. I think all Cornell & Diehl blends are aggressive in your taste, but this the proof that i was wrong. The crumble cake is easy to pack, the smell is strong smoky. There is a sort of vague sweetness somewhere in the background, but smoking this is sort of like falling face-first into the moist remains of the campfire you doused the night before while sucking on a charcoal lozenge. #1. This will keep you going. While it lacks the subtle complexity of Esoterica's "Penzance," PK delivers a lovely, creamy, cool smoke that leaves amazing flavors on the palate. Smoke it slow! I also had trouble keeping it lit, and it was not the easiest to rub out from the rock hard cake bar it comes in. But, its also just fun. Maybe I will try mixing it with something. While writing a review for Bow Legged Bear, I was reminded of how much it is akin to this. Latakia lovers delight! I was also surprised at the fact that I got a little bit of complexity out of this blend. if you liked 1792 but found iy just past your comfort level strengthwise the you should give this flavorful, after dinner smoke a try. Not an everyday smoke, but a great cold weather pleasure, to mix up the rotation. The room note is as expected, full Latakia. Simply THE Best!!! On reflection I doubt the Lat is Syrian either, I was probably confused by the other Orientals. Truly, the good tobaccos are better with age and this is one of them!!! A rich warm real tobacco flavour bath. Yes, a lot of Latakia, but I agree with several reviewers who used Pirate Kake as an example of how high Latakia content does not equate to overly strong. Those of you who enjoy latakia-forward blends are in for a real treat though, as the Orientals and burley add just enough balance to keep Pirate Kake from being a one-dimensional lat bomb. Pirate Kake is a pressed blend from Cornell & Diehl with mild nicotine strength, but big flavor & taste. *5/30: Well- Seems tastes change- Latakias a little strong for me now, and I think I like it better as a side dish, rather than main course.Still quality stuff though.
